Morse Code Blinking: How to Talk With Your Eyes

No radio, no flashlight, no free hand — just your eyelids. Blinking is the most stripped-down way to send morse code there is, and once, in 1966, it smuggled a single word past an entire prison regime.

Here is how blinking in morse code works. A quick blink is a dot. A long blink — eyes held shut for about three times as long — is a dash. Between letters, you keep your eyes open for a clear pause, and between words you hold a longer pause still. That is the whole system. String short and long blinks together and you are spelling letters; leave deliberate open-eyed gaps and the person watching can tell where one letter ends and the next begins.

Simple to describe, hard to do well. Your eyelids are the least cooperative signalling device you own: they blink on their own every few seconds, they tire fast, and they have no “off” state. The man who blinked “torture” on television

In 1966, US Navy pilot Jeremiah Denton had been a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for about a year. He had been shot down in July 1965 while leading a bombing mission, captured, and held in the prison system American POWs later made famous under the nickname “Hanoi Hilton.”

That year his captors put him in front of cameras for a televised propaganda interview. The point of the broadcast was to show the world a well-treated prisoner saying cooperative things. Denton could not control the questions, the setting, or how his words would be cut together. But nobody was watching his eyes.

As he answered, Denton blinked in morse code. Squinting and blinking as if the studio lights were bothering him, he spelled out one word, letter by letter: T-O-R-T-U-R-E− −−− ·−· − ··− ·−· ·. When the footage reached American hands, analysts decoded the pattern. It was the first confirmation US intelligence had that American prisoners of war in North Vietnam were being tortured.

Denton survived nearly eight years as a POW and was released in 1973. He was later elected a US senator from Alabama. The interview footage still exists, and you can watch the blinks land, dot by dot, knowing what they spell. It remains the most famous morse code message ever sent without a sound, a light, or a movement anyone thought to censor.

The lesson for everyone who came after: blinking works precisely because it hides in plain sight. Every human blinks. A watcher who does not know morse sees a tired man under bright lights. A watcher who knows morse sees a message.

The blink alphabet: same code, new muscle

There is no separate “blink alphabet.” Blinked morse uses the exact same morse code alphabet as radio, tapping, or a signal lamp — only the muscle changes. The standard timing convention gives every element a length measured in units:

In practice, blinked morse runs much slower than the same code on a radio key. Most beginners settle around one to two seconds per unit, which means a few letters per minute. That is fine. Blink morse is a short-message medium — a name, a yes, an SOS, one smuggled word — not a conversation channel. Slow and readable always beats fast and garbled.

Why blinking is the hardest morse medium

Every other morse channel has a resting state. A flashlight is off until you press the button. A telegraph key sits silent. A tapping finger lies still between letters — which is why tapped morse is far easier to read. Your eyes have no such neutral position. They are always doing one of the two signal states: open or shut. The channel is permanently “live,” and that causes three real problems.

First, involuntary blinks pollute the signal. You blink naturally somewhere around 15 to 20 times a minute without noticing. Each of those looks exactly like a dot. A reader has to filter your reflex blinks out of your message blinks, and the only tool they have is timing: message blinks come in rhythmic clusters with deliberate pauses, reflex blinks arrive at random. This is why exaggerated, metronome-steady timing matters more in blinked morse than in any other form.

Second, your eyelids tire fast. Deliberate hard blinking is surprisingly fatiguing. After a few minutes the muscles around your eyes ache, your dashes get shorter, your dots get sloppy, and the crisp 1:3 ratio collapses. Fatigue also makes involuntary blinking more frequent — so the noise increases exactly as your signal degrades. Short sessions are not a beginner crutch; they are how the medium works.

Third, there is no way to pause. With a flashlight you can lower the torch and the reader knows transmission has stopped. With your eyes, stopping looks identical to a long word gap — or to simply staring. Pairs who practise blinked morse usually agree on an explicit end signal, such as looking away or two slow deliberate closes, so “I am done” never gets read as “more is coming.”

Blinking as real assistive communication

Blink communication is not a historical curiosity. It is an established, documented method for people who have lost speech and most voluntary movement — including some people with locked-in syndrome and advanced ALS — because eyelid control is often among the last voluntary movements to remain. When almost every other muscle is unavailable, a blink can still carry intent.

Morse code is one of the systems used here. A short blink for dot and a long blink for dash can drive an eye-blink switch connected to assistive software, which turns the pattern into text or speech. The appeal is the same thing that makes morse work everywhere else: it needs only one reliable signal with two distinguishable lengths, and it can express the entire alphabet.

It is worth being honest about the trade-offs, though. Morse requires memorising the code, and many people in this situation use simpler systems instead: one blink for yes and two for no, or a partner reciting or pointing at letters on a board until a blink selects one. Partner-assisted spelling is slower per letter but needs no memorisation. Which system is “best” is not a technical question — it is whatever the person communicating finds most reliable and least tiring. Morse is one strong option on that menu, not the whole menu.

How to practise blink morse with a partner

Blinked morse is a two-person skill — sending into a mirror teaches you nothing about whether you are readable. Here is a practice sequence that works, using the Morsify translator as your reference:

  1. Agree the timing before the first blink. Decide your unit length together — one second per unit is a good start. Count a few dots and dashes out loud first so you both share the same internal clock.
  2. Start with single letters, not words. The sender picks a letter, checks its pattern in the translator, and blinks it. The receiver calls out what they read. Letters like E ·, T , S ··· and O −−− isolate the dot/dash distinction before any letter-gap skill is needed.
  3. Use the translator’s audio as a timing coach. Type a letter, play the sound, and blink along with it — eyes shut while the tone plays, open in the silences. This trains the 1:3 ratio into muscle memory faster than counting.
  4. Move to short words. SOS first, then your names. The receiver writes down dots and dashes as they see them and decodes at the end — pasting what they saw into the translator is a neutral referee for arguments about what was actually sent.

Common mistakes (and how to fix them)

No letter gaps. The classic failure. A beginner blinks the letters of a word back to back, and the receiver gets one long unreadable stream — ··· −−− ··· with no pauses could be SOS, or could be a dozen other letter combinations. If your partner keeps misreading you, the fix is almost never your dots and dashes; it is your gaps. Exaggerate the letter pause until it feels theatrical.

Blinking too fast. Nerves compress timing. Dots shrink to flickers, dashes shrink to dots, and the 1:3 ratio the whole code depends on disappears. Slow everything down by half. A message sent at a crawl and decoded on the first try is faster than a quick one that needs three repeats.

Dashes that are not clearly dashes. Holding your eyes shut for a beat feels long from the inside — from the outside it often reads as a slow dot. Count a full “one-two-three” at your unit pace with your eyes closed before opening.

Signalling through natural blinks. If you send while your eyes are dry or tired, reflex blinks weave into the message. Rest first, and if a stray blink slips out mid-letter, stop, hold a full word gap, and restart the letter — an agreed “scrub that” signal (rapid flutter of tiny blinks) saves a lot of confusion.

Watching the eyes but not the rhythm. Receivers fail by staring harder instead of listening to the beat. Blinked morse is rhythm delivered visually. Many receivers do better by quietly counting the sender’s units, or writing marks as they land, than by trying to “see” whole letters.

Blink morse in movies and TV — the honest version

Screenwriters love blinked messages, and it is easy to see why: a character silenced in every other way can still speak. But it is worth separating the filmed reality from the fiction.

The most powerful footage of blink morse on screen is not fiction at all — it is the real 1966 Denton interview, which has been replayed in documentaries for decades. One word, blinked under guard, at enormous personal risk. Notice what the real thing looks like: it is slow, it is disguised inside natural-looking squints, and it is short.

Fiction usually cannot resist speeding that up. When a character blinks out whole fluent sentences in a few seconds of screen time, the timing simply does not work — at realistic blink speeds a single sentence takes minutes of visible, deliberate effort. And some famous “blinking” scenes are not morse at all: in the film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on the memoir by Jean-Dominique Bauby, he communicates by blinking — but through partner-assisted spelling, choosing letters as an assistant recites a frequency-ordered alphabet, not through dots and dashes. Star Trek’s Captain Pike, another staple of this conversation, signals “yes” and “no” with one beep or two — a two-answer code, not morse.
